He is too busy pursuing his own selfish benefit to be concerned about the need of his neighbor. He is too busy to bother himself with the commandments of God for his life. He is too busy to observe the Lord's day. In the midst of his busyness he has no time for the things of God and His kingdom. Nothing can satisfy his cravings, his covetousness and materialism. He must get more and more for himself through his work and through his achievements. He spends his time to gain the fame and wealth of this world. Daily he increases his sin and guilt and worthiness of judgment. He spends his time in evil deeds and without any regard for His calling before God. The ungodly man does that when he lives his life in unbelief and rebellion against God. Time is lost when it is wasted, when it is spent in idleness and in vain pursuits, in ungodliness and the pleasures of sin. We have been redeemed in order that we might live our whole life unto Him and for His glory. We now belong to our faithful Savior Jesus Christ. Christ came to redeem us through His sacrifice on the cross. Most often the word redeem is used in connection with the fact that we are by nature guilty and lost sinners. The word “redeem” implies that something is lost. How often we must grieve over wasted time and pray to the Lord for His forgiveness for the great sin of foolishly squandering the time of our life. With the passing of every day our time on earth is getting shorter. It is foolish to wish that you could be young again because that is impossible. Take note how much older you are now than you were a few years ago. Recall some of the events of your past life and consider that the opportunities that you had at that time will never again be yours. It is good for us to think of that often. These opportunities pass and they can never be recovered. God gives us opportunities to serve Him and to live our lives unto Him. Time passes and we cannot ever get it back. Time is a very precious gift that God gives us for carrying out our calling in this life. Exceedingly great shall be the reward which they will enjoy for all eternity. Those who have suffered and died for the Lord's sake will join the great company of martyrs who have not counted even their lives dear for the Lords sake. Those who have been faithful in much shall receive a great reward. There will be a difference in the reward. The Lord will reward their faith in Him, their steadfastness, their good works, and the persecution and suffering they endured for the Lord's sake. The saints of God, chosen by grace unto eternal life, will spend eternity experiencing and enjoying the reward of God's grace. The ungodly man will spend eternity paying for the evil deeds that he performed during the days of his life on earth. And after our days on earth are accomplished the Lord will reward every man for the things he has done. We must fulfill that purpose in the days the Lord gives to us. What a fearful reality that is! What an utterly amazing fact! God has a calling for each of us to perform. Our short days on earth will determine how and where we will spend eternity. After that, we pass on to the eternal place that God has prepared for us. Contrary to what we often imagine, our time on earth is very short, only seventy or eighty years, for most of us, and for some even far less than that. He has appointed the time of our birth and the time of our death. God has also ordained the time of our lives individually. He sovereignly accomplishes His counsel and good pleasure in the history of the world. He declares the end of time from the beginning. He has ordained all the time of the history of the world. The inspired apostle of our Lord exhorts us in Ephesians 5:17 to “redeem the time.” He adds fearful urgency to this exhortation by warning us that the days are evil.

It turned out this was a bunker ship that refuels freighters coming out of the Suez Canal for trans-Atlantic crossings, and it had a very bright red “flammable” warning light on the front of its bridge superstructure.Sailing news, commentary, opinions, features and dock talk with a North American focus. We had turned on our mast head strobe light (anything in an emergency), and repeatedly shone our one million candle power spot light across our sails and toward the ship, actually seeing the helmsman’s face in our light, but all to no avail. So what happened? We had repeatedly attempted to raise the ship on VHF, even issuing a “Security” call. The only reply was, “So sorry, I did not see you.” We asked if they had not seen nor heard our VHF calls and signaling. After calming our uncontrollably shaking bodies and settling down a bit, we called the ship by name on VHF and told them we were the one they had almost run down but we were okay. Fighting the total incongruity of having seen that red light for many minutes, and fortunately being on our starboard power reach, we slammed the wheel over to port and instantly bore off to pass down the starboard side of the ship at only 50 feet off.īlasting down the ship’s side, we saw the name at the stern and also smelled an overwhelming odor of diesel. It was actually west bound and definitely going to run us over, but it was still showing us a bright red. How could that be? So, we logically held course for what we assumed to be a safe but closer port-to-port passing, thinking he must go more north-west than north. Weirdly though, only a few minutes later the radar showed the freighter to be closing on us but still definitely showing its red light. It was about 8 miles off on radar (we did not have AIS at that time) and my wife Katherine and I were having a super power reach southbound in a brisk westerly at about 7.5 knots on our Amel 46 Santorin Ketch, Sangaris. On a moon-less overnight passage from Sardinia south bound to Tunisia, a bright red light off to port and a substantial radar return alerted us to a freighter, likely heading north up to Rome on a wide port-to-port crossing. Craig Briggs was enjoying one such evening in the Mediterranean Sea, until he was nearly run over. Unplugged from the noise on land, our minds clear with every breath of sea air. While sailing at night, with stars glimmering over the sounds of the sea, is when we connect to the beauty and privilege of boating. These 10 simple Linux keyboard shortcuts will help you make your work in Linux far more efficient. When the command shows up you want, hit Enter to execute. So if you can only remember a switch you used, you can enter that and the command will appear. This is helpful because it does not discriminate between commands and switches. You’ll have returned to you any previously issued command with that character or combination within. When you hit Ctrl + r, you are prompted to enter a character (or string of characters). This is helpful for two reasons: You don’t have to retype commands all the time and you can more easily recall what commands have been run recently. The up or down arrow key, when in a terminal window, cycles through the history of commands you have issued in the terminal window. If you have a process running in a terminal and you want the terminal back but don’t want to kill the application, you can hit Ctrl + z to send the process to the background. When you have a process running in a terminal window (say you’re following a process with the tail + f command), you can kill that process with the Ctrl + c combination. (For example, Ctrl + a will highlight all the text on a page.) 7: Ctrl + c In a GUI application (such as OpenOffice), these combinations will work as they would in a normal desktop world. If you are working in a text editor like Nano (from within a terminal window), you can get to the beginning of a line with Ctrl + a and the end of a line with Ctrl + e. The following apply only to terminal (aka console) windows 6: Ctrl + a and Ctrl + e This works in all desktop environments and window managers. Instead of having to move your mouse to the edge of a screen, you can hit Alt and either the left or right arrow key to move from one desktop to another. If you’re using Linux, you probably know about the pager that allows you to have multiple desktops at one time. This is really good for debugging problems with the desktop or killing frozen applications when you don’t want to kill X completely. Now these are virtual terminals, so if you already have a graphical interface going, you’ll only be able to work in a text-based terminal window. So you can switch to another terminal by holding down Ctrl + Alt and hitting F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F7, etc. The default terminal you’re working in is 6. It switches to various virtual terminals. This is one of those mack-daddy shortcuts you very well might need to use. SEE: How Mark Shuttleworth became the first African in space and launched a software revolution (TechRepublic) 4: Ctrl + Alt + F* This shortcut works in most desktop environments and window managers. To cycle through the windows, hold down the Alt key and then press the Tab key until you land on the window you want. In other words, you don’t have to grab your mouse and click (or hover, depending upon your focus configuration) to give a window focus. This handy shortcut allows you to cycle through all open windows, stopping on the window you want to have focus. This combination works in all desktop environments and all window managers. If all else fails and you just need to reboot, you can hit this combination to instantly start the reboot process. It works with all desktop environments and window managers. This combination instantly logs you out of X, taking you back to the login screen. Use this shortcut when X isn’t responding or a program has locked up your desktop and you can’t get anything to respond. Note: This information is also available as a PDF download. We know everyone’s excited, and has loads more questions. We hope you found this first look at the Astel system informative and helpful. There’s a lot of depth to the Astel system, and we’re certain players will find even more creative and interesting ways to make use of it. Should you receive an Astel you already own as a reward for completing a dungeon, it will automatically be consumed, applying the experience points towards increasing the Astel’s star ranking. Such as completing primary storyline quests, where new Astels are introduced as critical events unfold, or as a reward for defeating a challenging dungeon boss. Reaching specific milestones will reward players with superior costumes for that Astel, and showcasing your achievements along with additional buffs.Īcquiring an Astel is a permanent and powerful addition to your character, which can be accomplished through normal gameplay. Socketing gems will augment their stat power, gaining experience and levels increases their base stats, and star rankings that drastically increase their combat prowess. In addition to supporting you in combat, Astels can be upgraded in a multitude of ways, increasing their overall power and providing players with special passive buffs. For solo players, you’ll be able to focus on playing the class you desire, without feeling penalized by low damage output, a lack of healing, or not having a tank. Speed clearing a dungeon with an extra damage dealer, by using tactical play and multiple healing companions for example. While opening up interesting group compositions and dynamics in the process. Mages and Archers increase physical or magic range damage, suppress enemy movement, and unleash wanton destruction from the afar.Ĭareful planning of your summoned companions will allow you to further augment your strengths and offset your weaknesses. Scholars and Muses provide increased healing power, battlefield support through healing, and augmentations in the form of buffs. Warriors and Assassins increase physical attack and traverse the frontlines punishing unwary enemies, or preventing opponents from fleeing. Knights are the stalwart tank, providing damage reduction and high threat generation. In combat, each Astel has a unique set of abilities to carry out their specific role, including a special combo attack triggered by specific player character skills. Saviors are the greatest of all Astels, boasting a nearly unrivaled amount of destructive power, but may only be invoked for very brief periods of time. Guardians are the next tier up, with a considerable power boost at the cost of an increased drain on the resources needed to maintain their presence. Servants, while weakest in terms of raw power, are easier to maintain and offer greater diversity in the amount of combat roles they can fill. After several iterations and a lot of important lessons learned, our team felt confident the Astel system accomplished the aforementioned goals.Īstels come in three power ranks, fulfil one of seven different combat roles, and have a full lore rich backstory. While also expanding the horizon on standard party compositions (ie: Tank, Healer, DPS), giving players more freedom to play the classes they desire. All in pursuit of features that would bridge the ever growing content gap between players who enjoy solo play and those who prefer to party up to tackle more challenging encounters. Early on in the development stages of Astellia, we explored a multitude of different game concepts. The InDesign catalog plugins are used to improve the work of graphic designers or marketing or sales departments by speeding up the process of importing product information into InDesign files. Why do I need an InDesign catalog plugin? The plugins add a whole series of automatic features that we do not find in the Adobe InDesign software and that make our work much easier such as importing product data and arranging them in the document following precise grouping logic chosen by the user. Iteration has taken Nuketown away from its primary inspiration, displacing the suburbs to suit the setting of each successive Treyarch game. Filmmakers keep returning to these twisted movie sets, populated by mannequins, built for some of the most enormous and irresponsible pyrotechnics ever seen. Radioactive, the new film about the life of nuclear pioneer Marie Curie, features a detour to the Nevada test site, echoing Indiana Jones. Perhaps that story contributes to the ongoing fascination of Hollywood - and by extension, the Santa Monica-based Treyarch - with doom towns. "The first Nevada doom town in 2010’s Black Ops remains the spookiest and most evocative." Officials said the Utah desert was perfectly safe, but in the years that followed, 91 of the 220 cast and crew on The Conqueror developed cancer, Wayne among them. In one bizarre case, a notoriously crummy epic (opens in new tab) starring John Wayne as Genghis Khan was shot just outside St. While the US government was building fake communities to test the effects of radiation, its bombs were impacting real ones. The city reported increases in a host of different cancers over that period, and in 1990 Congress passed an act to grant compensation for ‘downwinders’. Yet for two and a half decades, fallout was regularly carried west by the wind, where it would pass through St. The AEC, which picked the Nevada site after the Korean War made South Pacific testing unviable, told locals that their “best action not to be worried about fallout.” If the idea of above-ground nuclear testing in your national backyard sounds insane to you, then you’re not wrong. One 32 kiloton nuke was dubbed Harry, but later nicknamed ‘Dirty Harry’ by the press, since miscalculation and wind change produced unusually high amounts of radioactive fallout. The Atomic Energy Commission detonated over 100 bombs between 19, giving each one a cute name like Badger, Eddie, or Annie. Closer buildings were pulled to pieces, heat visibly rolling up their walls before they exploded. The mannequins' clothes had a practical purpose (officials wanted to observe how materials like wool, cotton and nylon would act under the extreme conditions of a nuclear blast), but they also served to make the scenes more disturbing, and certainly contributed to Nuketown’s uncanny atmosphere. Workers posed families of mannequins inside, as if captured during the last moment of normality before annihilation - the very moment so many Americans feared in the early Cold War, after childhood drills taught them to cower under their school desks. The song satirizes the idea of perfect suburban family life represented so often by TV programs at the time, a poignant topic for the suburban-boy Ramones from Queens, New York. Greg settles on the song "We’re a Happy Family" as a representation of the Ramones knack for writing catchy social commentary. Jim plays " Sheena is a Punk Rocker", calling it the "perfect rock song" and reminiscing about his young days listening to The Ramones. To stake their flag in the dissection's conclusion, Jim and Greg each choose their favorite song from Rocket to Russia. Tommy tells all, including the story of the band's suburban origins and the secret behind Dee Dee's famous, though not-so-useful count-offs. Jim and Greg, curious about the magic behind masters of punk, ask Tommy about the day-to-day during the recording process and the band's cross-pond rivalry with British punk group the Sex Pistols. This week, Jim and Greg revisit a Classic Album Dissection of The Ramones' 1977 speed machine featuring their 2007 conversation with drummer and producer Tommy Ramone. However, it wasn't until the next year, after a monumental European tour and the release of their third album, Rocket to Russia, that the group's characteristic break-neck punk sound flooded the airwaves and the took the rock world by storm. In 1976, The Ramones blasted onto the budding punk scene with their self-titled first LP and blew critics away with their blistering speed and old-school simplicity. The hosts were joined by Donna Gaines, sociologist, journalist, and author of the book Why The Ramones Matter, to discuss the musical, social, and even political contributions of the band. And although they were never at the top of the charts, their influence on both punk music and on American culture at large is undeniable. The original line-up was lead singer Joey Ramone, guitarist Johnny Ramone, bass guitarist Dee Dee Ramone and drummer Tommy Ramone. The Ramones formed in Queens, New York in 1974. This time, they're tackling a question that may be obvious to some: Why do the Ramones Matter? This week, Jim and Greg present another installment of our Summer School series. Greg acknowledges that with so much celebration and without deep reflection the album can be a chore to get through. Jim says with more brutal honesty, this album could have been a masterpiece. They both feel Chance is capable of much more complexity in his lyrics, though they find the production and performances on most songs to be very enjoyable. Jim and Greg both cite the confessional lyrics of " We Go High" as a noble gesture of honesty, but ultimately find the treatment of weighty topics such as fidelity, mortality and parenthood lack depth.
